Commissary

The commissary was founded in 1930 by the Department of Justice. The Commissary was placed in all Federal Institutions.

The commissary allows inmates to shop for “luxury” items while they are in prison. Funds are typically deposited by their friends, families, and their prison jobs.

Inmates have a spending limit of $360 per month. The commissary is only open on a designated day of the week where they can utilize the shop.

All federal prisons have their commissary list with prices available to the public.

Prison Life

FCI Safford houses their inmates in dormitories. Within these dormitories, there are eight-person cells. Inmates will have to share a cell with seven of their fellow inmates.

Every inmate in FCI Safford will be required to have a work assignment. Work assignments are matched with an inmate’s skills and interest.

Any inmate that is in dire financial need may be considered for placement on the UNICOR waiting list.

A regular day for the inmates typically starts around 7:30am and ends around 3:30pm. Some work assignments work later than 3:30pm such as laundry duty, UNICOR, recreation, food service, and unit orderlies. UNICOR is one of the main employers in the federal prisons.
