CI Taft is commonly known as the Taft Correctional Institution. The CI Taft is a private federal prison in California. While it is owned by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the facility is operated by Management and Training Corporation. Management and Training Corporation contracts with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
CI Taft first opened their doors back in 1997. CI Taft marks the first private prison under the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Back then the facility was managed by the GEO Group.
CI Taft is home to male inmates. The security levels here range from low-security to minimum-security.
Adjacent to the CI Taft is a minimum-security satellite prison camp. The satellite prison camp is home to male inmates.
It all started in August of 2016. The Justice Department stated that all the contracted facilities under the Federal Bureau of Prisons will be closed. This is because private prisons were deemed less safe and they did not really bring any cost savings to the department. However, it was not until a year later when they backtracked and announced that all the remaining thirteen private prisons will remain open until their contracts expire.
CI Taft is a federal prison. The easiest way to lookup an inmate in federal prisons is going to the BOP website. They have a database where you can search all federal inmates.
Inmates at CI Taft can receive written letters from their family and friends. These letters cannot have any foreign stains, such as lipstick, perfume, or cologne. Letters cannot have any unused envelopes, writing paper, or stamps either. These items can be purchased by the inmates at the commissary.
You will need to first verify if the inmate you are writing to is in the main campus at CI Taft or if they are residing in the satellite prison camp adjacent to the main campus.

To fund an inmate’s commissary account, you can either use Western Union, MoneyGram or you can mail a money order to the following address:
Federal Bureau of Prisons
Valid Committed Inmate Name
Inmate Eight-Digit Register Number
Post Office Box 474701
Des Moines, Iowa 50947-0001
If you send a non-postal money order to the above address, the money order is subjected to a 15-day hold before the funds will be deposited into an inmate’s account. Western Union and MoneyGram will charge a fee to use their service, but the funds will get into the inmate’s account much faster.
The last way to stay in touch with an inmate at CI Taft is through email. Email is also through Trulincs.
The email program is funded by the inmate trust fund, which is kept up with purchases from the commissary, the telephone service, and fees paid directly to Trulincs.
Emails are monitored and screened for content not suitable for them.
Inmates can have visitors while serving their time in CI Taft. The visitors will need to be put on an approved visitors list. Either the visitor can do so by going to the Federal Bureau of Prisons official website and fill out the visitor form, or they can have the inmate put them on the list from the inside.
Dress Code
When visiting the facility, please dress appropriately. No miniskirts, halter tops, or other clothes not suitable for a job interview. If such clothing is worn, you will be denied visitation.
