FCI Terminal Island is also commonly known as the Federal Correctional Institution, Terminal Island. The facility is a low-security federal prison in California. It is home to male inmates. The FCI Terminal Island is operated and managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
FCI Terminal island is nestled in the southern tip of Terminal Island, California. Adjacent to the prison is a Coast Guard base. FCI Terminal Island opened their doors on June 1, 1938. When the facility first opened, they had 40 female inmates and 610 male inmates. The prison was composed of a central quadrangle that was encompassed with three cell blocks. FCI Terminal Island costed nearly $2 million to build.
In 1942, the United States Navy managed the prison. They used it as a receiving station. Later on, they used it as barracks for the court-martialed inmates. It was not until 1950 when the United States Navy gave FCI Terminal Island back to California. The state of California then used the facility as a psychiatric and medical institution.
It was not until 1955 when the state of California gave back the facility to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. When the Federal Bureau of Prisons received the facility back, they converted the facility to a low-to-medium security prison. Originally the prison held both female and male inmates. In 1977, the facility was facing overcrowding issues. This led to the decision to keep FCI Terminal Island a male-only prison and they transferred the female inmates to a federal prison in Pleasanton.
FCI Terminal Island is situated in the front of Los Angeles Harbor. The facility is nestled in between Long Beach and San Pedro.

The commissary was founded in 1930 by the Department of Justice. The Commissary was placed in all Federal Institutions.
The commissary allows inmates to shop for “luxury” items while they are in prison. Funds are typically deposited by their friends, families, and their prison jobs.
Inmates have a spending limit of $360 per month. The commissary is only open on a designated day of the week where they can utilize the shop.
All federal prisons have their commissary list with prices available to the public.
