North Kern State Prison opened their doors in 1993. The North Kern State Prison is home to over 5,000 inmates. The facility is a reception center for all incoming prisoners. Sending a Mail/Care Package

Inmates in the North Kern State Prison can receive written letters from their friends and family members back home. These letters cannot contain any offensive language, lipstick stain, or any other contraband. 

However, your written letters can contain the following items:

•    Maximum of 40 Postage Embossed Envelopes

Anything else added to the written letter that is not on the list above will be discarded or returned to the sender. 

The North Kern State Prison allows inmates to receive care packages once a quarter. The care package; however, will need to be send directly from an approved vendor. Inmates cannot receive care packages from home. The approved vendor list is available on the California Department of Corrections website. 

The only items that can be sent from home is the inmate’s parole clothing and authorized medical equipment. The outside of the box must be clearly marked, or the items will be returned to the sender.

Sending Money

Inmates at the North Kern State Prison will need money to purchase items from the commissary such as, hygiene products, snacks, beverages, and clothing. However, they will also need money to be able to call home to their family and friends.

The North Kern State Prison has provided three easy options for inmate’s family and friends to deposit money into their accounts.

LockBox

There is no fee to use the LockBox service. This method provides a shorter holding time for those individuals that rather use a personal check, cashier’s check, or money order.

Electronic Fund Transfer

This option is the fastest option out of the three. The electronic fund transfer is a paid service; however, funds will be posted in the inmate’s account between 1 to 3 days.

There is not a fee to use this service. However, out of the three options, this is the slowest. Once the prison gets your check or money order, it will be subjected to a 30-day hold.

Visitation

Visitors will need to fill out and submit a visitor application. All visitors over the age of 16 will need to fill out the application. Once approved, you will be able to visit inmates on Saturdays and Sunday between the hours of 8:30am to 2pm. To be permitted into the visitation area visitors over the age of 16 will need to supply either their driver’s license, state identification card, or their United States Passport. 

Inmates can have visitors on the following holidays: 

•    New Year’s Day
•    4th of July
•    Thanksgiving
•    Christmas.

How Often Can I Visit?

Visitors will be able to visit inmates on Saturdays and Sundays. For added convenience, the North Kern State Prison also offers visiting appointments. You can book a visiting appointment on the VPASS website.
