Pelican Bay State Prison is situated in Crescent City, California. The facility opened their doors in 1989. The prison is home to some of the most dangerous inmates in California. Pelican Bay State Prison only houses maximum-security inmates. There is a wing of the facility that is for the general population. The other wing of the facility is made up of the security housing unit. The security housing unit is for inmates that are a threat to the prison staff members and their fellow inmates. This wing is full of inmates who are not easily managed and will start a riot at any second.

Alongside the Pelican Bay State Prison there is a minimum-security prison. This facility is home to inmates that are non-violent. You can find this facility just outside the fence from the Pelican Bay State Prison. The inmates in this minimum-security prison provide services and support to the Pelican Bay State Prison.

Since the Pelican Bay State Prison houses some of the most dangerous inmates in California, it is known as a supermax facility. All the inmates that are in the special housing unit will be in their cells for at least 22 hours every single day. However, the court requested that inmates in the special housing unit get at least 20 hours every month of yard time, which is also known as outdoor exercise.

The Pelican Bay State Prison is currently home to over 3,000 prisoners and some of them are famous inmates. The prison is frequently referred as one of the most dangerous prisons to be in, in the media.

It is easier than ever to send money to an inmate in the Pelican Bay State Prison. Before you can technically send money to an inmate, you will need to know their inmate identification number. If you are unsure of their inmate identification number, you can find it in the inmate database on the California Department of Corrections official website.

Once you have their inmate identification number, you will be able to send money to an inmate in three ways.

LockBox

To use the LockBox service there is no fee. It has a much faster holding time for those individuals who will be sending a cashier’s check, personal check, or a money order.

Electronic Funds Transfer

The electronic funds transfer is a paid service. However, this will be the fastest option out of the three to fund an inmate's account. Funds typically post between 1 to 3 days.

Mail to Jail

To mail your money order, cashier’s check, or personal check to jail is completely free. Out of the three options, this option will take the longest. All checks and money orders will be subjected to a 30-day hold before funds will be deposited into the inmate’s account.

Keep in mind that you will need to make all payments out to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Remember to put the inmates name and CDCR on the check/money order along with having your name and address on it as well. Failure to do so, will result into the funds not being added to the account.

Visitation

Before visiting an inmate, you will want to familiarize yourself with the prison’s expectations of visitors. They provide a handbook just for visitors. It is wise to read it before your first visit.

Visitors should also check the VPASS website before the drive down the prison to ensure that the prison is still accepting visitors. Visiting hours can change without notice.

Inmates can receive visitors on Saturdays and Sundays between the hours of 9am to 3pm. All visitors will need to arrive to the facility before 2pm. Visitors that arrived after 2pm will be denied visitation on that day.

Inmates can receive visitors on the following holidays:

•    New Year’s Day
•    4th of July
•    Thanksgiving
•    Christmas Day

Inmates housed in the special housing unit can also receive visitors. These visits will be no-contact meaning you will be doing a video visitation. In order to visit these inmates, you will need to go the VPASS website and make your appointment there as these visits are by appointment only.

Visiting inmates in the other portion of the Pelican Bay State Prison can also use the VPASS system to schedule an appointment. Having an appointment to visit will save you a lot of stress to ensure you have a certain timeframe to visit the inmate.
