Salinas Valley State Prison is situated in Soledad, California. The prison is home to all security level inmates. They hold inmates from the minimum-security level all the way to the maximum-security level inmates. As of current, the Salinas Valley State Prison is home to over 4,500 inmates in total. The Salinas Valley State Prison is currently holding more than double the inmates that the structure was originally designed for. 

The Salinas Valley State Prison is composed of five facilities. These facilities are known as A, B, C, D, and M. 

Facility A is home to the Special Needs Yard (SNY) prisoners.  The housing units around the Facility A is home to level-3 and level-4 inmates, which happens to be the two highest rankings. 

Facility M housing the level-1 inmates. There are around 200 inmates that reside in the Facility M building. 

At one point in time, the Salinas Valley State Prison had a gymnasium. However, due to the overcrowding that plagued the facility, it was transitioned into a dormitory. It was not until 2008, when the inmate population started decreasing that the dormitory closed. 

Salinas Valley State Prison offers the Department of Mental Health Intermediate Treatment Program also known as the Salinas Valley Psychiatric Program. This program is put in place to help the psychological needs of prisoners. 

Salinas Valley State Prison has a wide variety of programs their inmates can take advantage of. They offer numerous educational courses including GED prep and English as a second language program. They also have re-entry programs that help inmates obtain the tools necessary for going back out into the community. They even have a few vocational studies including custodial work, landscaping, and auto body repair. Inmates are encouraged to participate in any and all programs to help better themselves.

Sending a Mail/Care Package

Inmates can receive written letters from their friends and family members back home. These written letters cannot contain any lipstick stains or perfume and cologne stains either. All incoming mail is checked by the prison staff before being handed to the inmates. If a letter is found to go against the rules, the letter will either be returned to sender or it will be properly disposed of. 

However, inmates can receive these following items in their letters from their family and friends:

Inmates can receive books, newspapers, and magazines. The books, newspapers, and magazines are required to be sent directly to the prison from the publisher. You can do so using sites like Amazon. All books are required to be paperback. Hardcover books are not permitted. 

Unfortunately, inmates cannot receive packages from home. Inmates are permitted to receive a care package using a vendor on the approved vendors list once a quarter. The approved vendor list is available for viewing on the California Department of Corrections official website. When using an approved vendor, they will only ship the items that are approved by the Salinas Valley State Prison, you will not have to worry about sending items that are not approved by the prison. 

The only items that can be shipped from home is the inmate’s parole clothing and authorized medical equipment. The box must clearly state that on the outside or it will get sent back to the sender.

Inmates will need money to purchase items from the commissary such as beverages, snack foods, clothing, sneakers, entertainment, and other odds and ends.

Inmates will also need money to use the telephone service to call home to their family and friends.

Money is a pretty important part of living while inside the Salinas Valley State Prison. You can fund an inmate’s account in three different ways.

LockBox

There is no fee to use the LockBox service. This method provides a shorter holding time for those individuals that rather use a personal check, cashier’s check, or money order.

Electronic Fund Transfer

This option is the fastest option out of the three. The electronic fund transfer is a paid service; however, funds will be posted in the inmate’s account between 1 to 3 days.

There is not a fee to use this service. However, out of the three options, this is the slowest. Once the prison gets your check or money order, it will be subjected to a 30-day hold.

Visitation

All visitors over the age of 16 must fill out and submit a visitor’s application. Once approved, you will be able to attend visitation during the hours above. All visitors will need to present their government identification card. This can be one of the following:

•    Driver’s License
•    State Identification Card.

The Salinas Valley State prison visiting hours are on Saturdays and Sundays between the hours of 8:30am to 3pm. Inmates can also receive visitors on the following holidays:

•    New Year’s Day
•    4th of July
•    Thanksgiving 
•    Christmas.

 

How Often Can I Visit?

You can visit as often as there are appointments in Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP). They upload new appoints for the Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) on Sundays at 8pm.

The visiting starts in first in, first out type of fashion. No new visitors will be allowed in 45 minutes before the end of the visit day. 45 minutes before the end of the visit day officers start escorting those who were first in out of the visitor room.
