One of California’s well-known, yet oldest prisons is San Quentin State Prison. San Quentin State Prison is situated on land that was once known as Point San Quentin back in 1852. Point San Quentin was once the solution for the lawlessness that was going throughout California through that time period.

While the prison was being built, inmates had to sleep on the Waban. During the day, they were to help construct the prison.

Up until 1933, San Quentin State Prison held both females and male prisoners. In 1933, Tehachapi was completed, and the female prisoners went there.

San Quentin sits on 432 acres. The facility has a great view of the bay. You can locate the Golden Gate Bridge 12 miles north of the facility.

The San Quentin State Prison has 4 cell blogs, Central Health Care Service Building, maximum security cell block, medium security cell block, and a minimum-security firehouse.

San Quentin is also home to California’s gas chamber and death row.
