FCI Greenville is commonly known as the Federal Correctional Institution, Greenville. The facility is a medium-security federal prison. The prison use to hold only male inmates. In 2000, the facility turned into a women’s prison since there was a lack of women’s facilities in the north-central portion of the United States.
FCI Greenville is operated and managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. FCI Greenville opened their doors in 1994. There is a satellite camp adjacent to the main campus.
Some notable inmates that have served time at FCI Greenville are:
• David Mack: Convicted of armed robbery. Released in 2010.
• Walter Bond: Convicted of Arson. Serving 12 years.
• Derrick Shareef: Convicted of attempted use of weapons of mass destruction. Serving 35 years.

The commissary was founded in 1930 by the Department of Justice. The Commissary was placed in all Federal Institutions.
The commissary allows inmates to shop for “luxury” items while they are in prison. Funds are typically deposited by their friends, families, and their prison jobs.
Inmates have a spending limit of $360 per month. The commissary is only open on a designated day of the week where they can utilize the shop.

Even when in prison, you may still need legal counsel. There are strict procedures one will have to follow to obtain legal reference materials alongside their legal counsel.

Inmates can receive visitors. Inmates can have a maximum of 4 adults and 5 children in one visit. Children visitors are those under the age of 16.
FCI Greenville has a point system in place for visitation. Every inmate starts the month out with 40 points. It costs 1 point per hour weekday visits. It costs 2 points per hour weekend visit.

The visiting starts in first in, first out type of fashion. No new visitors will be allowed in 45 minutes before the end of the visit day. 45 minutes before the end of the visit day officers start escorting those who were first in out of the visitor room.

FCI Greenville was originally designed to hold the male inmates in the main campus in 2000, and the satellite prison camp was to hold the female inmates.
In total, there are 1,366 inmates. There are 1,020 inmates in the main campus, and the remaining 346 inmates are housed in the camp. The plans were originally only supposed to hold a maximum of 1,232 inmates in total.
Inmates are housed in cells that can fit up to 3 people. FCI Greenville has 4 housing units. The satellite prison camp housing units are dormitories that consist of two-people cells.
