The USP Marion is commonly known as the United State Penitentiary, Marion. The facility is a medium-security federal prison in Illinois. The prison is operated and managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. It houses male inmates.

Adjacent to the United States Penitentiary, Marion is a minimum-security satellite prison camp. The satellite prison camp also houses male inmates.

USP Marion opened their doors back in 1963. USP Marion was replacing the Alcatraz Island maximum-security federal prison in San Francisco. USP Marion was the first control unit when violence ended up requiring a long lockdown back in 1983.

USP Marion was originally planned to hold a least 500 of the United States most dangerous federal inmates from Alcatraz. This prison administrators wanted to keep this prison as safe and secure as they could while avoiding any incidents like the Alcatraz had went through.

In 1968 the prison implemented the program known as Control and Rehabilitation Effort also known as CARE. Inmates in the CARE program would spend majority of their time in solitary confinement or in group therapy sessions.

It was not until 1973, that the “control unit” cells were designed. Inmates in these cells would spend majority of their time in their cells, and they would not have much contact with prison staff or their fellow inmates.

USP Marion is situated in southern Illinois.
