The Marion County Jail is in Indianapolis, IN. The Marion County Jail has some great history behind it.
The very first Marion County Jail dated back to 1822. It was a log cabin. The cost of the jail was $312. It was only standing for eleven years before an inmate burned the jail down.
The second Marion County Jail cost $60,000. However, it was built of brick this time, as they didn’t want the same thing happening twice. This jail also had a second floor for living quarters for the sheriffs.
It wasn’t until 1852 that the third Marion County Jail was constructed. The jail this time costed the county $100,000.
It wasn’t until 1891 that the fourth and final Marion County Jail was built. The jail costed the county $150,000. It was only designed to hold up to 150 prisoners, with executive, administrative, and law enforcement offices.
Throughout the years, the jail started going over capacity making the county to keep expanding the jail itself to be able to hold everything they needed to. It wasn’t until 1985 that the jail doubled in size. They added a 5-story addition. Which can hold another 300 more inmates. The addition also brought the dental offices, medical offices, recreation, law library, and visitation areas.
