Inmates in the Shelby County Jail can receive written letters from their family and friends back home. These letters will be inspected by the staff at the jail before being released to the inmate it is addressed to. 

The staff at the jail has the right to dispose of or return any letter or item that is not allowed in the prison. Visitation

Inmates can receive visitors while they are serving time in the Shelby County Jail. If you are wanting to visit an inmate, you will need to talk to the inmate to know when their visiting hours are. The staff at the jail will not release any visitation hours for any inmates. You will have to direct to talk to the inmate yourself. 

When visiting an inmate, you are required to bring in a photo identification card. This photo identification card can either be your driver’s license, state identification card, or your United States passport. 

You should leave all of your other personal belongings in the car. You will not be permitted to bring in anything other than your photo identification card and your keys to the visitation area. 

You will need to follow a strict dress code when visiting the jail. You should not wear the following: 

•    See through clothing
•    Tank tops
•    Miniskirts
•    Offensive clothing
•    Revealing clothing

If you are wearing any of the clothing mentioned above, you will be refused visitation. If you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you will be refused visitation. The Shelby County Jail has the right to refuse visitation to anyone. They have the right to cancel visitation without notice.

If you are looking to visit an inmate at the Shelby County Jail, you will need to talk to the inmate about the visitation schedule and how many visits they can have. The visiting starts in first in, first out type of fashion. No new visitors will be allowed in 45 minutes before the end of the visit day. 45 minutes before the end of the visit day officers start escorting those who were first in out of the visitor room.
