Commissary

The commissary was founded in 1930 by the Department of Justice. The Commissary was placed in all Federal Institutions.

The commissary allows inmates to shop for “luxury” items while they are in prison. Funds are typically deposited by their friends, families, and their prison jobs.

Inmates have a spending limit of $360 per month. The commissary is only open on a designated day of the week where they can utilize the shop.

All federal prisons have their commissary list with prices available to the public.

Prison Life

At the USP Terre Haute, they offer a Special Confinement Unit. The Special Confinement Unit is a separate area for the death row inmates. This unit is designed to provide inmates with a safe and secure place. Male inmates can be transferred to the Special Confinement Unit from other facilities such as federal or state prisons.

All divisions of a prison are important, but one important aspect to many prisons is administrative segregation. Not all prisons have administrative segregation, but FCC Terre Haute does. When inmates are housed in a maximum-security prison, chances of them being at risk for an altercation with their fellow inmates are very high. Inmates that are at risk for these alterations will be placed in administrative segregation. Administrative segregation is a wing of the prison that has more correctional officers added with more rules.

Inmates housed in the FCI Terre Haute are housed in cells. Inmates in the satellite prison camp are kept in dormitories. Within these dormitories, they either have two, eight, or twelve-person rooms. All inmates will have to share their space with at least one other inmate.

Inmates housed in the USP Terre Haute have four different housing units. These housing units include either dormitories with two-person cubicles or housing units with two-person cells.

The FCC Terre Haute offers their inmates a wide variety of programs including the following:

•    Medical Services
•    Psychology Services
•    Library Services
•    Religious Services
•    English as a Second Language Program
•    GED Prep
•    Commissary
•    Recreational Program
•    Parenting Program
•    Release Prep Program
•    Adult Continuing Education
•    Vocational Training
•    Apprenticeship Program
•    UNICOR Factory
•    Drug Education Class
•    Residential Drug Abuse Program
•    Non-Residential Drug Abuse Program
•    Narcotics Anonymous
•    Alcoholics Anonymous

Keep in mind that the Residential Drug Abuse Program is only available at the satellite prison camp and at the FCI Terre Haute. The USP Terre Haute does not house the Residential Drug Abuse Program. The Residential Drug Abuse Program is a 500-hour program where inmates will go through group counseling and one-on-one counseling. Inmates will live separately from the general population inmates. Inmates who successfully complete this program will have up to a year reduced off their sentence.
