The Indiana State Prison is a maximum-security level prison in Michigan City, Indiana. The facility is home to male inmates. However, the Indiana State Prison also has a minimum-security wing too.
The Indiana State Prison opened their doors in 1860. The prison was Indiana’s second state prison. One of the facilities most notable inmate was John Dillinger, a bank robber. Dillinger was released from the facility on parole in 1933.
Indiana State Prison dates all the way back to 1859. The state of Indiana granted a grand total of $50,000 for the prison to be built. Back then the name for the facility was State Prison West as the other state prison was known as State Prison East.
The reason they were opening a second state prison in Indiana was the State Prison East was becoming very scarce and a new prison needed to be built.
In 1860, they purchased approximately 100 acres in Michigan City. This costed them around $4,500. Charles Seely was the first warden of the prison. Seely was also the superintendent in charge of the construction of the facility too.
The first building to be built was known as the Temporary Prison Building. The building was only 200 feet and was made from red brick. It was not until a year after the facility opened that they contracted the prisoners to help with the labor the institution needed.

Inmates at the Indiana State Prison can receive written letters from their family and friends back home. These letters cannot be on any colored paper and cannot be in colored envelopes. All paper must be white lined paper. The envelopes need to be standard white envelopes. If the letters or envelopes are colored, they will be returned to the sender.
Inmates can receive photographs too. However, they will need to be printed online paper also. Other paper will not be permitted.

Inmates will need money to live while they are serving time in the Indiana State Prison. Inmates will need money to purchase a variety of items from the commissary also known as the canteen. Inmates can purchase clothing, beverages, food, snack items, entertainment, arts and crafts and much more from the commissary.
Inmates will also need money to make phone calls to their family and friends back home. Phone calls at the prison is not free.
Family and friends can fund the inmate’s account by using the popular money service JPAY. If your loved one has been in numerous jails, you probably know a lot of about JPAY. JPAY is like the jail version of Paypal.

Keep in mind, if you decide to mail a money order or a check to the JPAY you will need to download and send along the inmate deposit form.
For those that rather use their credit or debit card online, the service does incur a fee that you will be charged. Fees do vary depending on how much money you are sending at one time.
Visitors will be subjected to going through what the Indiana State Prison calls Cell Sense. Cell Sense is typically a metal detector. It prevents visitors from bringing any contraband into the prison. If you have any metal on your body, you will need to remove them. Underwire undergarments typically set off the alarms.
Visitors will need to present a government identification card. This can either be your driver’s license, state identification card, or your United States Passport.
All visits will be heavily monitored. Touching is not allowed. If you fail to follow these rules, your visit will be terminated.
Visitors will need to adhere to a dress code. There will be no tank-tops, mini-skirts, see-through clothing, and offensive. If you do not follow dress code, you will be denied visitation rights for that day.
If you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you will be denied visitation rights for the day too.
Keep in mind that inmate’s visitation hours can change at a moments notice. They can even terminate the visitation hours without notice too.
With the Indiana State Prison broke down into different wings, they have different visiting hours. You will need to know what wing your inmate is in before you visit to ensure you are visiting on the correct day and the correct time.
ATTORNEY VISITS: 8:00am to 4:00pm, daily. Weekend reservations must be submitted the Thursday prior.
GENERAL POPULATION: 11:00am to 5:15pm, Monday through Friday; Weekends and holiday 7:00 am to 3:00pm

You can visit on days from schedule. If there is no lockdown and the inmate are in good standing, you will be available to visit on these two days out of the week.

The visiting starts in first in, first out type of fashion. No new visitors will be allowed in 45 minutes before the end of the visit day. 45 minutes before the end of the visit day officers start escorting those who were first in out of the visitor room.
