Adjacent to the United States Penitentiary, Leavenworth is a minimum-security satellite prison camp. This satellite prison camp also houses male inmates.

USP Leavenworth opened their doors in 1903. Between the main campus and the satellite prison camp, the facility holds around 1,800 male inmates. Nearly 1,400 of them are housed in the main campus, and the other 400 of them are in the satellite prison camp. Even though the facility holds around 1,800 male inmates, it was only originally designed to hold a little over 1,600 in the main campus and around 400 in the satellite prison camp.

USP Leavenworth was supposed to be a maximum-security prison. However, in 2005 it was downgraded to a medium-security facility.
