Ashland FCI is a low-security prison. FCI in the Federal Bureau of Prisons means Federal Correctional Institution. Ashland FCI is in Ashland, Kentucky. It is situated in Boyd County.  The facility is nestled to 125 east of Lexington, Kentucky.

Ashland FCI also has a low-security satellite camp which happens to be situated adjacent from Ashland FCI main campus. The facilities are managed and operated by Federal Bureau of Prisons.
The main campus holds up to 1,080 male inmates. The camp holds up to 252 male inmates in that campus.

Ashland FCI first opened back in the 1940’s. Back then, it was home to bootleggers, house tax evaders, and individuals who violated postal laws. Down the line, the prison then transformed to a Federal Youth Center and was home to younger offenders.

It was not until 1970’s when they converted Ashland FCI back to being home to male prisoners as a low security.

As of today, Ashland FCI is home to prisoners who are serving out their short sentences. Ashland FCI services southern Indiana, Kentucky, western Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, West Virginia, and Tennessee.

Sending a Mail/Care Package

You can send mail to inmates at FCI Ashland. You will need to address the envelope as follows:

Inmates can get mailed books, magazines, newspapers; however, they need to be mailed and sent from the publisher. You cannot box up these items and send it from your home.

Do NOT send money to an inmate using the FCI Ashland address. All funds sent through the mail must be addressed to a processing center in Des Moines, Iowa. This applies to all Federal inmates, regardless of where they are incarcerated.

Email

The last way to stay in touch with an inmate at FCI Ashland is through email. Email is also through Trulincs.

The email program is funded by the inmate trust fund, which is kept up with purchases from the commissary, the telephone service, and fees paid directly to Trulincs.

Emails are monitored and screened for content not suitable for them.

Admissions and Orientation Handbook

Your first day in prison, you are bombarded with a ton of information. One booklet you will be giving is the Admissions and Orientation (A&O) Handbook. 

This handbook will supply you with general information about the prison itself alongside the prison’s rules, programs, and regulations you will have to follow while you are serving out your sentence. 

It will be in your best interest to familiarize yourself with handbook as it is your responsibility to transition smoothly to prison life.

Commissary

The commissary was founded in 1930 by the Department of Justice. The Commissary was placed in all Federal Institutions. 

The commissary allows inmates to shop for “luxury” items while they are in prison. Funds are typically deposited by their friends, families, and their prison jobs. 

Inmates have a spending limit of $360 per month. The commissary is only open on a designated day of the week where they can utilize the shop.

Legal Activities

Even when in prison, you may still need legal counsel. There are strict procedures one will have to follow to obtain legal reference materials alongside their legal counsel.

Visitation

To visit an inmate serving time in the FCI Ashland, you first must be put on their approved list.

When an inmate first comes to the FCI Ashland, they fill out a visitor form. When they complete their share, a form is mailed off to those individuals who were listed on the visitor form and send it back to the facility. The facility may call and request more background information, if needed.

Visiting hours are Friday through Monday 8 am to 3 pm. Visitors must be on the inmates approved list before they will be allowed access to the visitation room. Inmates are only allowed to have 3 adults visiting at one time.

Dress Code

When visiting the facility, please dress appropriately. No miniskirts, halter tops, or other clothes not suitable for a job interview. If such clothing is worn, you will be denied visitation.

The visiting starts in first in, first out type of fashion. No new visitors will be allowed in 45 minutes before the end of the visit day. 45 minutes before the end of the visit day officers start escorting those who were first in out of the visitor room.

Prison Life

When it comes to housing, Ashland FCI has a lot of that. It has four cell blocks, a special housing unit, two dormitories, and two general population housing units. The Ashland Satellite camp has two large dormitory housing units.

Inmates are provided with outdoor recreation where they can run, walk, play softball, handball, and basketball. They also have access to indoor recreation that includes musical instruments, hobby and craft areas, alongside cardiovascular exercise equipment.

FCI Ashland inmates also are provided a variety of educational opportunities such as GED preparation, GED testing, Adulting Continuing Education. They also have a few vocational programs including HVAC, automotive maintenance, welding, and master gardening. This also includes vocational training too.
