FMC Lexington is commonly known as the Federal Medical Center, Lexington. It is a federal prison situated in Kentucky. It houses both female and male inmates that need medical attention or mental health care.

The facility is an administrative building meaning that it can hold inmates of all five security levels. It is operated and managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Adjacent to the Federal Medical, Lexington there is a satellite prison camp. The prison camp is a minimum-security facility that houses female inmates.

The prison opened in May of 1935. It sits on 1,000 acres of land. It was under the name of “United States Narcotic Farm” but changed to “U.S. Public Health Service Hospital” a little while later.

In 1967, they changed their name once again. This time their name was “National Institute of Mental Health, Clinical Research Center.”

The purpose of this facility was to help treat people who went into treatment under their own accord for drug addiction. They were going to treat patients with experimental treatment plans; some of the first kind throughout the United States.

Throughout the days of the facility, nearly two-thirds of the patients were voluntary. Many chose the institution instead of getting a federal sentence. The other one-third of the patients were not voluntary due to federal charges that either had to do drugs or did not have to do with drugs.
