USP McCreary is commonly known as the United States Penitentiary, McCreary. The facility is a high-security federal prison in Kentucky. It houses male inmates. The prison is operated and managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. 

Adjacent to the United States Penitentiary, McCreary is a minimum-security satellite prison camp. The satellite prison also houses male inmates. 

USP McCreary is situated 125 miles south of Lexington, but 88 miles north of Knoxville. The prison is in Pine Knot of McCreary County. 

Currently, the USP McCreary is housing 1,274 male inmates in the main campus and another 142 male inmates in the satellite prison camp.

Sending a Mail/Care Package

Inmates can receive and send letters to family and friends. All letters going in and out of the prison will be checked by prison staff to ensure everyone's safety. 

Inmates can also receive books, magazines, and newspapers. All books, magazines, and newspapers are required to be sent to the facility directly from the publisher. No items from a personal address will be accepted. All books must be paperback.

Do NOT send money to an inmate using the USP McCreary address. All funds sent through the mail must be addressed to a processing center in Des Moines, Iowa. This applies to all Federal inmates, regardless of where they are incarcerated.

Email

The last way to stay in touch with an inmate at USP McCreary is through email. Email is also through Trulincs.

The email program is funded by the inmate trust fund, which is kept up with purchases from the commissary, the telephone service, and fees paid directly to Trulincs.

Emails are monitored and screened for content not suitable for them.

Admissions and Orientation Handbook

Your first day in prison, you are bombarded with a ton of information. One booklet you will be giving is the Admissions and Orientation (A&O) Handbook. 

This handbook will supply you with general information about the prison itself alongside the prison’s rules, programs, and regulations you will have to follow while you are serving out your sentence. 

It will be in your best interest to familiarize yourself with handbook as it is your responsibility to transition smoothly to prison life. 

USP McCreary Admissions & Orientation Handbook

Commissary

The commissary was founded in 1930 by the Department of Justice. The Commissary was placed in all Federal Institutions. 

The commissary allows inmates to shop for “luxury” items while they are in prison. Funds are typically deposited by their friends, families, and their prison jobs. 

Inmates have a spending limit of $360 per month. The commissary is only open on a designated day of the week where they can utilize the shop. 

All federal prisons have their commissary list with prices available to the public.

Legal Activities

Even when in prison, you may still need legal counsel. There are strict procedures one will have to follow to obtain legal reference materials alongside their legal counsel.

There are also many opportunities to be taken advantage of to afford the proposal of legal documents when behind bars.

Visitation

Visitation at USP McCreary is held on Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays between the hours of 8:30am to 3pm. 

Inmates are permitted to have up to 5 adult visitors. Visitors over the age of 16 years of age is an adult visitor. 

As the visitation room gets full, the first visitors in will be asked to leave. The prison runs on a first in, first out basis. 

Inmates who are in the Special Housing Unit will have visitation in a non-contact room. 

USP McCreary supplies a children’s play area for children that are visiting the prison. However, inmates will not be able to be in the children’s play area.

The visiting starts in first in, first out type of fashion. No new visitors will be allowed in 45 minutes before the end of the visit day. 45 minutes before the end of the visit day officers start escorting those who were first in out of the visitor room.

Prison Life

The main campus at USP McCreary consists of 12 housing units. In these housing units’ inmates will either have their very own cell or they will have to share their cell with a fellow inmate.

In the satellite prison camp, inmates are housed in dormitories.

All inmates serving time in the USP McCreary are either required to work, or they are required to participate in an education course. The Education Department has many programs from inmates to choose. These programs include, but not limited to:
