MCFP Springfield is also commonly known as the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners, Springfield. The facility is a federal prison in Missouri. The facility provides dental, mental health, and medical services to their male inmates. MCFP Springfield is operated and managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. 

Springfield, Missouri offered over 600 acres of land to build a federal prison during the Great Depression. In 1930, Congress approved the federal prison. MCFP Springfield did not open for another three years. The official opening happened in 1933. The facility was known as the United States Hospital for Defective Delinquents. At the time, Marion R. King was the superintendent. 

Until 1966, the land compassing the prison was farming land that the prisoners worked on. It was not until 1977, when the federal government returned the original land where the federal prison was situated on back to Springfield, Missouri. There were prison riots on several occasions. Prison riots happened in 1941, 1944, and 1959.

Sending a Mail/Care Package

Inmates can receive written letters from their family and friends. These letters cannot contain any lipstick stains, along with perfume or cologne. If letters come into the prison like that, they will either be returned to the sender, or they will be discarded if there is no return address.

Letters cannot also contain any unused writing paper, stamps, or envelopes. These items are available for purchase the commissary in the prison.

If you send a non-postal money order, it will be on a 15-day hold before the funds will be deposited into an inmate’s account.

The last way to stay in touch with an inmate at MCFP Springfield is through email. Email is also through Trulincs.

The email program is funded by the inmate trust fund, which is kept up with purchases from the commissary, the telephone service, and fees paid directly to Trulincs.

Emails are monitored and screened for content not suitable for them.

Commissary

The commissary was founded in 1930 by the Department of Justice. The Commissary was placed in all Federal Institutions. 

The commissary allows inmates to shop for “luxury” items while they are in prison. Funds are typically deposited by their friends, families, and their prison jobs. 

Inmates have a spending limit of $360 per month. The commissary is only open on a designated day of the week where they can utilize the shop.

Legal Activities

Even when in prison, you may still need legal counsel. There are strict procedures one will have to follow to obtain legal reference materials alongside their legal counsel.

Visitation

Inmates can also have visitors too! Visitors will need to be placed on the inmate’s approved visitors list. Visitors can either go to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website to fill out the form, or they can have the inmate place them on the list. When visiting be sure you have either your driver’s license or a state identification card. You will need one or the other to be permitted into the visitation area. 

Dress Code

When visiting the facility, please dress appropriately. No miniskirts, halter tops, or other clothes not suitable for a job interview. If such clothing is worn, you will be denied visitation.

The visiting starts in first in, first out type of fashion. No new visitors will be allowed in 45 minutes before the end of the visit day. 45 minutes before the end of the visit day officers start escorting those who were first in out of the visitor room.
