The facility provides dental, mental health, and medical services to their male inmates. MCFP Springfield is operated and managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Springfield, Missouri offered over 600 acres of land to build a federal prison during the Great Depression. In 1930, Congress approved the federal prison. MCFP Springfield did not open for another three years. The official opening happened in 1933. The facility was known as the United States Hospital for Defective Delinquents. At the time, Marion R. King was the superintendent.
Until 1966, the land compassing the prison was farming land that the prisoners worked on. It was not until 1977, when the federal government returned the original land where the federal prison was situated on back to Springfield, Missouri. There were prison riots on several occasions. Prison riots happened in 1941, 1944, and 1959.
