FCI Berlin is commonly known as the Federal Correctional Institution, Berlin. The facility is in Coos County, New Hampshire. It is a medium-security prison that holds adult male prisoners. The prison is operated and managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The prison also has a satellite prison camp adjacent to the main campus. This facility is a minimum-security prison that also houses adult male prisoners.

Berlin FCI is situated on 700 acres of land. The main campus is enclosed with two 16-foot-high chain link fence alongside 10 rolls of razor wire in between the two fences. The facility also has microwave and motion detection systems that monitor any and all movements around the prisons premises. Two roving patrol cars also monitor the prisons premises 24/7.

The construction of the prison finished in late 2010. It was built to withstand over 1,100 inmates in their main campus alongside over 120 inmates in their satellite prison camp.

It was not until October 21, 2012, that the facility opened their doors. FCI Berlin is the Federal Bureau of Prisons 118th facility in the United States.

The email program is funded by the inmate trust fund, which is kept up with purchases from the commissary, the telephone service, and fees paid directly to Trulincs.

Admissions and Orientation Handbook

Your first day in prison, you are bombarded with a ton of information. One booklet you will be giving is the Admissions and Orientation (A&O) Handbook. 

This handbook will supply you with general information about the prison itself alongside the prison’s rules, programs, and regulations you will have to follow while you are serving out your sentence. 

It will be in your best interest to familiarize yourself with handbook as it is your responsibility to transition smoothly to prison life.

Commissary

The commissary was founded in 1930 by the Department of Justice. The Commissary was placed in all Federal Institutions. 

The commissary allows inmates to shop for “luxury” items while they are in prison. Funds are typically deposited by their friends, families, and their prison jobs. 

Inmates have a spending limit of $360 per month. The commissary is only open on a designated day of the week where they can utilize the shop. 

All federal prisons have their commissary list with prices available to the public.

Legal Activities

Even when in prison, you may still need legal counsel. There are strict procedures one will have to follow to obtain legal reference materials alongside their legal counsel.

Visitation

Prisoners in FCI Berlin are also allowed to receive visitors unless they are currently on lockdown. As of today, visitors are not allowed on the premises until further notice. When they are allowed back on the premises, we will update with the correct information on how one can visit and what they have to do before visitation.

Dress Code

When visiting the facility, please dress appropriately. No miniskirts, halter tops, or other clothes not suitable for a job interview. If such clothing is worn, you will be denied visitation.

The visiting starts in first in, first out type of fashion. No new visitors will be allowed in 45 minutes before the end of the visit day. 45 minutes before the end of the visit day officers start escorting those who were first in out of the visitor room.

Prison Life

The main campus is home to over 1,000 male prisoners. The satellite camp holds about 80 male prisoners. The facility has three housing units.

Prisoners in the satellite camp will be required to work in the main campus. They will either be assigned to laundry duty, facility maintenance, kitchen duty, or landscaping.
