FCI Ray Brook Inmate Search and Prison Information

FCI Ray Brook is the commonly referred to as the Federal Correctional Institution, Ray Brook. The facility is a medium-security federal prison in New York. The FCI Ray Brook is home to male inmates. The prison is operated and managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. 

Even though the FCI Ray Brook was built to be a prison, it held the Olympic Village for the 1980 Winter Olympics. The prison opened their doors after the Winter Olympics in 1980. 

In 2010, the FCI Ray Brook celebrated their 30th anniversary. In 2016, the FCI Ray Brook hosted the pilot Pell grant program. Now they are offering college courses through North Country Community College. 

Over the years, the Federal Bureau of Prisons received many complaints about the conditions at FCI Ray Brook. The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit found evidence that justified the lawsuit about inmates that were allegedly held in hot, cramped room with little to no ventilation. 

FCI Ray Brook is situated in Essex County, New York. It is midway between Saranac Lake and the villages of Lake Placid.

Sending a Mail/Care Package

FCI Ray Brook allows their inmates to receive letters from their family and friends. Inmates cannot receive care packages from their family and friends. However, the family and friends can only send authorized medical equipment or their released clothing. 

Inmates can receive books, magazines, and newspapers. However, these items need will need to be mailed to the prison directly from the publisher. All books will need to be paperback. No hardcover books will be accepted. 

You cannot send in your letters any unused envelopes, stamps, and writing paper. These items will be sold at the prison commissary store.

Do NOT send money to an inmate using the FCI Ray Brook address. All funds sent through the mail must be addressed to a processing center in Des Moines, Iowa. This applies to all Federal inmates, regardless of where they are incarcerated.

Email

The last way to stay in touch with an inmate at FCI Ray Brook is through email. Email is also through Trulincs.

The email program is funded by the inmate trust fund, which is kept up with purchases from the commissary, the telephone service, and fees paid directly to Trulincs.

Emails are monitored and screened for content not suitable for them.

Admissions and Orientation Handbook

Your first day in prison, you are bombarded with a ton of information. One booklet you will be giving is the Admissions and Orientation (A&O) Handbook. 

This handbook will supply you with general information about the prison itself alongside the prison’s rules, programs, and regulations you will have to follow while you are serving out your sentence. 

It will be in your best interest to familiarize yourself with handbook as it is your responsibility to transition smoothly to prison life.

Commissary

The commissary was founded in 1930 by the Department of Justice. The Commissary was placed in all Federal Institutions. 

The commissary allows inmates to shop for “luxury” items while they are in prison. Funds are typically deposited by their friends, families, and their prison jobs. 

Inmates have a spending limit of $360 per month. The commissary is only open on a designated day of the week where they can utilize the shop. 

All federal prisons have their commissary list with prices available to the public. 

Legal Activities

Even when in prison, you may still need legal counsel. There are strict procedures one will have to follow to obtain legal reference materials alongside their legal counsel.

Visitation

Inmates will need to put visitors on their approved list. Visitors can put themselves on the inmates approved list by filling out the form on the Federal Bureau of Prisons website. You are instructed to leave all her personal belongings in the car. The only thing you should bring with you is your car key and either your driver’s license or your state identification card. 
 

How Often Can I Visit?

This will depend on what rank the inmate is. There are three ranks:

• LSCI – 12 points
• FCI – 5 points
• USP – 9 points

• Each visit is one point regardless of the day.

LSCI

• 2 points for weekend visits
• 2 points for federal holidays visits
• 1 point for weekday visits

USP

• 2 points for weekend visits
• 0 points for federal holiday visits
