About New York City Department of Corrections

The New York City Department of Corrections is responsible for keeping and maintaining an updated database on inmates serving out their time on New York City state prisons.

The database only has inmates under the New York City Department of Corrections supervision. You can search the database by their case number, NYSID, book number, or their first and last name. Unlike the state of New York, New York city and county prisons along with their federal prisons keep databases separate from the states.

If you are looking for an inmate in a city or county jail, you will need to contact the proper authorities. If you are looking for an inmate in federal prison, you will need to go to the FBOP website.

How to Do an Inmate Search in New York

Nationwide Inmate Records Online Check

Jail records, court & arrest records, mugshots and even judicial reports.

When an offender is housed in state prison, they are the property of the Department of Corrections Division. As stated above every state’s Department of Corrections Division has their own jail roster or database that the general public may use.

The New York Department of Corrections offender search database can be found on the official New York Department of Corrections website.

You can search the inmate list by using the following pieces of information:

The NYSID number will take precedence during all searches. The NYSID is a six-digit number. All incoming inmates will be assigned their NYSID number by the New York Department of Corrections. This will be the easiest and quickest way to locate an inmate.

If you decide to enter their NYSID number in the field provided, you will NOT need to enter their first and last name. However, the NYSID field will only show results for the EXACT number you have entered, so you will want to double check, if no results pop up.

If you don’t know the inmate’s NYSID number or there are no search results for the NYSID number you plugged in, the next thing you can do is search by the inmate’s first and last name.

When you finally get some search results, you will see a list of all inmates that fit the criteria you plugged in. This is not a release search. All inmates are currently sitting behind bars.

You will see the following pieces of information in the New York jails inmate search:

You can click on the inmate’s name to bring up their own personal file. When you do this, you will see the following information:
