The first real jail was built in 1803 and was a log building. In 1811, this jail was removed to make room for a new building, which was a combination jail and Sheriff's residence.
It was not until late 1803 that the first jail was built. The first jail was a log building. Seven years later it was taken down to construct a newer building.
It was not until 1834 that a heavy cut stone building was constructed. It consisted of four cells. This was the Montgomery County Jail for the next ten years.
In 1844, the county built a new jail. This jail could hold around 60-70 inmates.
In 1869, the new jail was built. It was built on Third Street and sat right behind the courthouse. This facility had gallows and even carried out the county public hangings. The last public hanging took place in 1877.
Almost 100 years later in 1965, the Montgomery County Jail that is standing now was built. The jail can hold up to 900 inmates.

You can fund the inmate’s commissary account by going to the kiosk in the Montgomery County Jail lobby. You can use the kiosk 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. At the kiosk cash, Visa, Discover, and Mastercard’s will be accepted.
If you do not live close to the Montgomery County Jail or do not feel like going down to the jail, you can mail a money order to the jail itself. All money orders must be payable to the Montgomery County Jail.
All visits cannot be guaranteed. The Sheriff or his or her designee will either approve or deny visits.
You should get to the jail at least 15 minutes before your visit appointment time.

Please know that all your belongings should stay in your car. You will not be able to bring anything into the visitation room. Visitors will be subjected to searches. Visitors must adhere to a strict dress code. Jail staff can deny visitation for any circumstances.
Inmates are only allowed to have one visit per calendar week.
This visit can have a maximum of three people. This count also includes children.

The visiting starts in first in, first out type of fashion. No new visitors will be allowed in 45 minutes before the end of the visit day. 45 minutes before the end of the visit day officers start escorting those who were first in out of the visitor room.
