FCI El Reno is commonly known as the Federal Correctional Institution, El Reno. The prison is in Oklahoma. It is a medium-security federal facility that houses male inmates. It is operated and managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. 

Adjacent to the main campus there is a satellite prison camp that houses minimum-security male inmates. 

FCI El Reno is one of the two last standing farm prisons that is under the Federal Bureau of Prisons. 

FCI El Reno is situated in the central portion of Oklahoma. It is about 30 miles west of Oklahoma City.

The facility opened on April 4, 1933. When it originally opened, it was called the United States Southwestern Reformatory or U.S.S.R. for short.  It first was receiving inmates from USP Leavenworth, Federal Reformatory at Chillicothe, and Federal Prison Camp at Fort Riley. 

It was not until 1938, where the facility changed their name to Federal Reformatory, El Reno. From then it evolved into what is now known as the Federal Correctional Institution or FCI for short, where it holds adults aging from 18 to 26, who was assigned a medium-security prison.

In the late 1970s, FCI El Reno started to house all age medium-security adults. 

The facility situated on 2,600 acres of land. 56 acres of the land is surrounded by a fence.

Sending a Mail/Care Package

Inmates can receive mail (cards, letters, etc). You can send mail to the following address.

Inmates can get mailed books, magazines, newspapers; however, they need to be mailed and sent from the publisher. You cannot box up these items and send it from your home.

Do NOT send money to an inmate using the FCI El Reno address. All funds sent through the mail must be addressed to a processing center in Des Moines, Iowa. This applies to all Federal inmates, regardless of where they are incarcerated.

Email

The last way to stay in touch with an inmate at FCI El Reno is through email. Email is also through Trulincs.

The email program is funded by the inmate trust fund, which is kept up with purchases from the commissary, the telephone service, and fees paid directly to Trulincs.

Emails are monitored and screened for content not suitable for them.

Admissions and Orientation Handbook

Your first day in prison, you are bombarded with a ton of information. One booklet you will be giving is the Admissions and Orientation (A&O) Handbook. 

This handbook will supply you with general information about the prison itself alongside the prison’s rules, programs, and regulations you will have to follow while you are serving out your sentence. 

It will be in your best interest to familiarize yourself with handbook as it is your responsibility to transition smoothly to prison life.

Commissary

The commissary was founded in 1930 by the Department of Justice. The Commissary was placed in all Federal Institutions. 

The commissary allows inmates to shop for “luxury” items while they are in prison. Funds are typically deposited by their friends, families, and their prison jobs. 

Inmates have a spending limit of $360 per month. The commissary is only open on a designated day of the week where they can utilize the shop. 

All federal prisons have their commissary list with prices available to the public. 

Legal Activities

Even when in prison, you may still need legal counsel. There are strict procedures one will have to follow to obtain legal reference materials alongside their legal counsel.

There are also many opportunities to be taken advantage of to afford the proposal of legal documents when behind bars.

Visitation

Inmates can have visitors on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, and federal holidays from 8am to 3pm. 

The FCI El Reno visitation room has a capacity of 133 people. The satellite prison camp has a capacity of 57 people. 

Inmates are not permitted to have more than 5 adult visitors at once. Inmates can also have up to 5 children too. 

Visits are on a point system. All inmates start each month with 32 points a month. Weekday visits cost one point per hour. Weekends and holidays are 2 visiting points per hour visit. Inmates are limited to 20 points per weekend and holiday visits. Inmates may ask the Warden for another 10 visiting points.

Inmates are allowed to request up to 10 additional visiting points from the Warden.

A visitor must be on the approved visiting list of the inmate they wish to visit.

Any visitor who is 16 years of age and older must provide proper identification prior to entering the visiting room.

Visitors are permitted to bring only a clear coin purse, which will be searched upon arrival.

Before you can visit, you will need to be on the inmates approved visitor list. Adults from the age of 16 and up must have the proper identification. Proper identification is a picture identification card. Under the age of 18 can use their student ID card, and adults over the age of 18 need to have a government-issued ID card.

The visiting starts in first in, first out type of fashion. No new visitors will be allowed in 45 minutes before the end of the visit day. 45 minutes before the end of the visit day officers start escorting those who were first in out of the visitor room.

Prison Life

The facility was designed to hold 936 inmates. However, the FCI El Reno holds 1,226 inmates total. 945 inmates at the main campus and another 281 inmates at the satellite camp.

Inmates are currently serving time at FCI El Reno range in age from 20 to 60 years old.

The prison has 4 housing units for their inmates. Each of the houses of double occupancy cells. With the prison housing more, inmates than originally designed they have cells with 3 bunks.

The satellite prison camp has one housing unit. However, this housing unit has 4 wings with small cubes for the inmates housing.
