FCI Schuylkill is also commonly referred to as the Federal Correctional Institution, Schuylkill. The facility is a medium-security federal prison in Pennsylvania. The FCI Schuylkill is home to male inmates. The prison is operated and managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. 

Adjacent to the FCI Schuylkill is a minimum-security satellite prison camp. The satellite prison camp is home to male inmates too.  

It was on April 22, 1987, when the Federal Bureau of Prisons stated that they were going to build a $40 million medium-security federal prison that was going to be known as FCI Schuylkill. The federal prison was going to house anywhere from 500 to 60 inmates. It was to be built in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. 

The prison was going to bring in 250 jobs and another 144 non-prison jobs. Many politicians through the area were for this project. 

FCI Schuylkill is in Schuylkill County. The prison is 46 miles away from Harrisburg and another 175 miles away from Washington, D.C.

Sending a Mail/Care Package

Inmates can receive written letters from their family and friends. Inmates can also receive books, newspapers, and magazines too. However, the books, newspapers, and magazines must be sent to the prison directly from the publisher. Books must be paperback. Hardcover books will not be permitted into the FCI Schuylkill. 

Inmates cannot receive care packages from their family and friends without written approval from their unit supervisor or another authorized prison staff member. Prisoners can receive their release clothes and any authorized medical equipment without prior approval. 

Inmates cannot receive unused writing paper, stamps, and envelopes through the mail. These items are available for purchase through the commissary. All mail that has lipstick stains, cologne stains, and perfume stains, will be discarded.

Do NOT send money to an inmate using the FCI Schuylkill address. All funds sent through the mail must be addressed to a processing center in Des Moines, Iowa. This applies to all Federal inmates, regardless of where they are incarcerated.

Email

The last way to stay in touch with an inmate at FCI Schuylkill is through email. Email is also through Trulincs.

The email program is funded by the inmate trust fund, which is kept up with purchases from the commissary, the telephone service, and fees paid directly to Trulincs.

Emails are monitored and screened for content not suitable for them.

Admissions and Orientation Handbook

Your first day in prison, you are bombarded with a ton of information. One booklet you will be giving is the Admissions and Orientation (A&O) Handbook. 

This handbook will supply you with general information about the prison itself alongside the prison’s rules, programs, and regulations you will have to follow while you are serving out your sentence. 

It will be in your best interest to familiarize yourself with handbook as it is your responsibility to transition smoothly to prison life.

Commissary

The commissary was founded in 1930 by the Department of Justice. The Commissary was placed in all Federal Institutions. 

The commissary allows inmates to shop for “luxury” items while they are in prison. Funds are typically deposited by their friends, families, and their prison jobs. 

Inmates have a spending limit of $360 per month. The commissary is only open on a designated day of the week where they can utilize the shop.

Legal Activities

Even when in prison, you may still need legal counsel. There are strict procedures one will have to follow to obtain legal reference materials alongside their legal counsel.

There are also many opportunities to be taken advantage of to afford the proposal of legal documents when behind bars.

Visitation

To visit an inmate serving time in the FCI Schuylkill, you first must be put on their approved list.

When an inmate first comes to the FCI Schuylkill, they fill out a visitor form. When they complete their share, a form is mailed off to those individuals who were listed on the visitor form and send it back to the facility. The facility may call and request more background information, if needed.

When visiting the facility, please dress appropriately. No miniskirts, halter tops, or other clothes not suitable for a job interview. If such clothing is worn, you will be denied visitation.

The visitation days will differ from the FCI Schuylkill and the satellite prison camp.

The visiting starts in first in, first out type of fashion. No new visitors will be allowed in 45 minutes before the end of the visit day. 45 minutes before the end of the visit day officers start escorting those who were first in out of the visitor room.

Prison Life

FCI Schuylkill consists of four housing units. Within these housing units, there are two-person cells. No inmate will have their own cell. Every inmate will have to share a cell with one of their fellow inmates. All housing assignments are completely randomized.

While inmates at the satellite prison camp are housing in dormitories. Within these dormitories are two-person cells. Inmates will also be sharing a cell with one other of their fellow inmates.

The Residential Drug Abuse Program is a hard program to get into with its increased popularity. The program separates their living quarters from the general population. The program is 500-hours. Once an inmate successfully completed the program, they can have their sentence reduced up to a year.
