USP Canaan is commonly known as Canaan United States Penitentiary. The USP Canaan is in Waymart, Pennsylvania. The prison is a high-security prison. It houses 1,340 male inmates. 

Attached to the USP Canaan is a minimum-security satellite prison camp that can hold up to 160 male inmates. 

The facility consists of 170,000 square yards. The prison was designed by David R Cassara. The prison officially opened their doors in March of 2005. It was originally designed to only hold 1088 male prisoners in several housing units.

Do NOT send money to an inmate using the USP Canaan address. All funds sent through the mail must be addressed to a processing center in Des Moines, Iowa. This applies to all Federal inmates, regardless of where they are incarcerated.

Email

Inmates have access to an email like program called TRULINCS. It allows inmates to send emails up to 13,000 characters.

Unfortunately, they are not allowed to receive, view, or send attachments. However, this service does come with fees.

Admissions and Orientation Handbook

Your first day in prison, you are bombarded with a ton of information. One booklet you will be giving is the Admissions and Orientation (A&O) Handbook. 

This handbook will supply you with general information about the prison itself alongside the prison’s rules, programs, and regulations you will have to follow while you are serving out your sentence. 

It will be in your best interest to familiarize yourself with handbook as it is your responsibility to transition smoothly to prison life.

Commissary

Inmates can use the commissary to buy hygiene products, food (junk and regular), clothes, entertainment. There is a max limit of $290 that can be spent a month.

Legal Activities

Even when in prison, you may still need legal counsel. There are strict procedures one will have to follow to obtain legal reference materials alongside their legal counsel.

Visitation

To visit an inmate serving time in the USP Canaan, you first must be put on their approved list.

When an inmate first comes to the USP Canaan, they fill out a visitor form. When they complete their share, a form is mailed off to those individuals who were listed on the visitor form and send it back to the facility. The facility may call and request more background information, if needed.

Dress Code

When visiting the facility, please dress appropriately. No miniskirts, halter tops, or other clothes not suitable for a job interview. If such clothing is worn, you will be denied visitation.

The visiting starts in first in, first out type of fashion. No new visitors will be allowed in 45 minutes before the end of the visit day. 45 minutes before the end of the visit day officers start escorting those who were first in out of the visitor room.

Prison Life

USP Canaan has 6 housing units. The satellite camp has a Special Housing Unit for those inmates who need to be in the disciplinary unit. The Special Housing Unit can hold 250 male inmates.  The Special Housing Unit cells are 13-ft by 7-ft. These cells also have showers and are two-person cells.

The 6 housing units face one another alongside a maintenance building. The cells are 13-ft by 7-ft. Each cell has bunk beds, a sink and toilet combo, small table, and a permanent stool. The housing blocks are equipped with an air conditioner too. Majority of cells are two-person cells.

5 to 6 times a day inmate is counted. They are counted at 12am, 3am, 5am, 10am, 5pm, and 10pm.

Work assignments start at 4:30 am, and all inmates are required to be up by 7:30am. Every inmate is required to be in their cells by 10pm every night.
