The USP Lewisburg is commonly known as the United States Penitentiary, Lewisburg. The facility is a high-security federal prison is in Kelly Township, Pennsylvania. It houses male inmates. The facility is operated and managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. 

Adjacent to the United States Penitentiary, Lewisburg there is a minimum-security satellite prison camp. The satellite prison camp also houses male inmates. 

USP Lewisburg was originally named the North Eastern Penitentiary. It was one of four federal prisons to open their doors back in 1932. The facility was designed and imagined by Alfred Hopkins. 

In November of 1995, there was a prison riot in USP Lewisburg. It was started by 10 inmates. Over 20 inmates visited the hospital due to the prison riot. One inmate suffered multiple broken bones along with missing some teeth. Many inmates were brought to solitary confinement, and over 400 inmates were transferred out of the facility. 

In 2009, USP Lewisburg was known as a Special Management Unit. Its sole purpose is to house disruptive and violent criminals in the federal prison system.

Inmates can receive books, magazines, and newspapers through the mail. The one condition is that all books, magazines, and newspapers must be sent directly from the publisher. You can use sites like Amazon to send these items to the prison.

Do NOT send money to an inmate using the USP Lewisburg address. All funds sent through the mail must be addressed to a processing center in Des Moines, Iowa. This applies to all Federal inmates, regardless of where they are incarcerated.

The last way to stay in touch with an inmate at USP Lewisburg is through email. Email is also through Trulincs.

The email program is funded by the inmate trust fund, which is kept up with purchases from the commissary, the telephone service, and fees paid directly to Trulincs.

Commissary

The commissary was founded in 1930 by the Department of Justice. The Commissary was placed in all Federal Institutions. 

The commissary allows inmates to shop for “luxury” items while they are in prison. Funds are typically deposited by their friends, families, and their prison jobs. 

Inmates have a spending limit of $360 per month. The commissary is only open on a designated day of the week where they can utilize the shop. 

All federal prisons have their commissary list with prices available to the public. 

Legal Activities

Even when in prison, you may still need legal counsel. There are strict procedures one will have to follow to obtain legal reference materials alongside their legal counsel.

Visitation

The main campus and the satellite prison camp offers the same hours for visitors. Inmates can have visitors on Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays from 8am to 3pm. 

Visitors must be put on the inmates approved list before they will be permitted into the visitation area. Visitors over the age of 16 are required to have a government ID with them to visit an inmate. Visitors under the age of 16 must be accompanied by their legal guardian when visiting an inmate at the USP Lewisburg.

The visiting starts in first in, first out type of fashion. No new visitors will be allowed in 45 minutes before the end of the visit day. 45 minutes before the end of the visit day officers start escorting those who were first in out of the visitor room.
