The Red Onion State Prison was the inspiration behind the Wallens Ridge State Prison, which is also a supermax facility that opened a year later in 1999.

The plans of the prison were announced back in 1992. The construction was going to be placed on 375 acres of land that the Pittston Coal Company donated. The cost of the prison was going to be around $52 million.

Majority of the residents in Wise County were supportive of the prison being built here due to the increase of jobs it was going to provide the community, plus it was still going to remain isolated for the most part.

It was not until a few years later in 1995 that they finally broke ground. When the prison was all said and done the total cost of the construction was well over $70 million. When the prison opened it employed nearly 800 people.

Majority of the inmates at the Red Onion state are in solitary confinement. Solitary inside of Red Onion State Prison is a big thing. The Red Onion State Prison is famous because there is a documentary on it. It has housed its fair share of famous inmates too.

Completing an inmate search is easier than ever now. The task of hunting down an inmate will not take days as it once did in the past. Now you can find an inmate in the comfort of your own home with your mobile device or your computer. The process will take you a maximum of 5 minutes.

The Red Onion State Prison is operated and managed by the Virginia Department of Corrections. The Virginia Department of Correction is the agency that is responsible for keeping and maintaining an up to date database of all the inmates in their custody.

The Virginia Department of Corrections has their database available to the general public. You can find the database on the Virginia Department of Corrections official website.

You can search the database by the inmate’s identification number or the inmates first and last name.

When you search for an inmate, you will be given a list of all inmates fitting the search criteria. You will see their name, gender, race, release date, and what prison they are in. This is the only information you will get. You will not get any other personal identifying information.

Keep in mind that the Virginia Department of Corrections operates many prisons, so the Red Onion State Prison will not be the only prison you will see in this database.

The database is updated once a day. If you need more information on an inmate that is not available online, you will need to get in touch with the Offender Management Unit. They can further help you with the information that you are looking for.

While serving time at the Red Onion State Prison, inmates are allowed to receive written correspondences from their family and friends back home.

As of April 2017, any inmate that is at a Security Level 2 and higher, their mail will be photocopied, and the inmate will receive the photocopy.
