FCI Morgantown is commonly known as the Federal Correctional Institution, Morgantown Kennedy Center. The facility is a minimum-security federal prison in West Virginia. The prison is operated and managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
FCI Morgantown has a nickname of ‘Club Fed.’ The nickname came to be because the facility offers many amenities, which is very similar to a college campus, bocce ball court, basketball court, and a movie theater. Not to mention that the FCI Morgantown is home to many non-violent white-collar offenders.
In December 1968, the Robert F Kennedy Youth Center was dedicated by Senator Ted Kennedy. The prison was the first of its kind to try out a new method of detention. It was using the “unit management” model. This model was using a more humane approach. It would group inmates into 50 to 200 of them in a group. The groups were monitored by multidisciplinary teams. Each group had specialized staff that would provide make sure all inmate needs were met through counseling, religious services, rehabilitation, and training. Under a decade after the facility opened, the prison went from holding juvenile inmates to adult inmates. It was not until later when the name was changed to what it is today, FCI Morgantown.
